Interested in coming to the Betaspring Digital Meets Physical Hackathon, but worried about your hacking skills? Do you feel the need to brush up? Learn all you need to know and more at these crash courses before the big day.

There was once a time when most engineers, indeed many people, knew how to change the oil and spark plugs in their car, or fix the broken motor on a vacuum cleaner. A good number of Americans got a healthy dose of mechanical understanding from working on farms and dealing with heavy machinery. That kind of experience is mostly a vestige of our agrarian, non-digital past. Today, most of us couldn't tell the difference between a gear pump or a bourdon tube, a rack & pinion, or hydraulic cylinder. Exceptionally few people know what a BJT and MOSFET are, and how they impact every aspect of our lives. Unfortunately, most people couldn't care less. If you are hacking on a physical project, you might want to know this stuff... actually, this knowledge is the path success and lacking a background in basic electronic and mechanical systems surely leads to failure!

Here's the opportunity to change that. Kipp Bradford is leading a two-session crash course in the basics of physical technology and physical computing! Come to one or both sessions.

Sunday, January 15th, 1-6pm
Course 1: Making 101 - Hands-on intro to how things work (the engineering behind everyday objects)
We will look at basic engineering concepts from transistors to pneumatics. This experience will involve Legos and breadboards. We will also take apart stuff like a gasoline engine from a go-cart and different kinds of electric motors. Consider this a basic intro to tinkering and hacking.

Tuesday, January 17th, 6-9pm
Course 2: Physical Computing 101 - Hands-on intro to Arduino and "Making Things Talk"
We will build the basic conceptual and physical bridges from the computer world to the physical world. This experience will involve computers and the Processing programming language, Arduino, Arduino "shields", motors, sensors, and more. Bring things you want to connect and control!

What we do.

Competitive entrepreneurial teams from around the country come to Providence for Betaspring's intensive 12-week accelerator program. Our full-immersion program enables teams with a strong start on a high-growth venture to rapidly transform into functional, fundable companies.

Betaspring runs a spring (February-May) and fall session (August-November). During the program, teams work hard on developing working prototypes or on scaling your business if you have a working model. Each week, teams will meet with advisors and mentors that offer feedback on your team’s concepts, ideas and prototypes, as well as insight into how to scale a company, deal with obstacles along the way, and manage large scale adoption when it comes. As your team progresses, you will hone your company pitch as you present to and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs and investors.
